Dr Alan Fletcher graduated MB ChB from the University of Sheffield UK in 1992. He obtained an honours degree in Anaesthesia as an undergraduate before traning in General Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Emergency Medicine in Leeds and Sheffield. He gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine in 2004 (FRCEM) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP) in 2010. He is an affiliate Member of the Royal College of Pathologists.
A special interest in death certification led to Alan being the first Medical Examiner (of documents and cause of death) in England and Wales as part of a Department of Health pilot and in collaboration with HM Coroner South Yorkshire (West). This role means he has reviewed over 17,000 cases and gained a unique insight into mortality and cause of death. He is responsible for future training of medical examiners as National Clinical Lead for e-Learning (Medical Examiners) and as Chair of the Medical Examiners Committee at the Royal College of Pathologists.
Alan uses his experience to provide a remarkably general opinion on medico legal issues connected with acute and emergency care and in the legal aspects of death where medical care may be implicated.
Married with four children, he likes Sheffield Wednesday, stock car racing and fell running with his two Bernese mountain dogs.
